'Across Kazakhstan by Rail' - a Photo Essay by Mario Heller

 

I chose this photo essay as I found it was an interesting way of framing the stories of strangers into one unified collection. While all of these people come from different paths in life, they are brought together in this train. This setting allows for the photographer to capture the stories of passengers and attendants, as well as capturing the views from the window throughout the journey. I also enjoy how these photos are composed, as they each show a vastly different perspective of the area and the people on board.

18/11/21 Lab - Weegee

Weegee (Usher/Arthur Fullig, born 12 June 1899) was a self-taught photographer from the age of fourteen. His work focused on current events until the 1940s, when he first received recognition outside of the newspaper industry. His most notable works come from his Distortion series, when he presented recognisable figures and other works of the time in warped portraits. By using textured and/or curved glass, he was able to present caricatures and abstract pieces in his work. On occasion, he would photograph paintings and sculptures this way, presenting them in a new light. This experimental style could add a strong emotional effect to his work, as seen in The End? .
